What We Learned on our European Horticulture Travels

    February 8, 2018February 27, 2019

I can’t believe we’ve already been to Europe and back already!! Where’s the time gone?! I tried to update the blog while we were away, but wifi was hard to find and often our days didn’t wrap up until late and I was too tired to sit down and write anything. To catch you up,

Day 2: Dry Hydroponics, World Horti Center, and a Windmill

    January 18, 2018February 27, 2019

Our group packed a lot into day 2, a lot of information in our brains and a lot of unique Netherland experiences. Our primary reason for venturing across the ocean is to tour as many horticulture related businesses as we can, and today was incredible! There’s just something about the efficiencies that Dutch companies in

Day 1: Delft & The Hague

    January 16, 2018February 27, 2019

We made it!!! We’re officially in Holland!! I actually can’t believe I haven’t been here sooner, especially being a greenhouse owner. We (Tanner ‘the hubs’ and myself) flew to Europe on KLM on a direct flight from Edmonton to Amsterdam. The flight was wonderful (so easy when it’s direct) and the KLM staff were really

We fail too, all the time. The more you grow plant We fail too, all the time. The more you grow plants, the more you learn how forgiving they are. And that's the fun part, figuring out what works best for each one.⠀
⠀
This year we decided to grow our own crop of tropicals, but with a lack of light (with our days being so short in the winter in Northern Alberta), and colder temperatures we lost nearly 10% of our baby fiddles. But, figuring out what we were doing wrong enabled us to bring a bunch of them back to life!⠀
⠀
If plants could teach, they'd tell us to keep trying and even if we do fail, to learn and grow on!
***seed alert*** If you normally buy seeds online ***seed alert*** If you normally buy seeds online or from a seed catalogue our advice is to buy them now. Seeds are beginning to sell out already.

But if you normally purchase them at a greenhouse or in a store, not to worry - most retailers will have loads to choose from (part of the shortage is that retailers have been adding on to their orders).

Back to our regular scheduled post.

These January days at the greenhouse are known as our focus days.

We're in deep planning mode right now, finalizing all our plans for spring 2021. We acutally work about 6 to 8 months in advance and about 75% of spring 2021 was planned in the fall.

We're starting to feel the energy and excitment of what's to come; and I don't know about you, but our sunny days are feeling longer and longer.

What does January look like for you?

This handy guide will help you diagnose environmental issues that you may see on your tropicals and what to do about them. I'm packaging up 20 years of experience into this helpful PDF. While you're packing up some of your seasonal deco While you're packing up some of your seasonal decor, it's a great time to dust and clean your plants.

What's the best way to dust off their leaves?
I like to throw my plants into the shower and give them a good "rain".

Then I grab a moist fibre-cloth, and gently wipe off the leaves (remember not to use cold water).

Should you buy anything fancy-shmancy to clean them with? No, they just need a little dusting every so often so that they have clean leaves to photosynthesize efficiently.
