We get asked a lot where our plants are from. We grow all the bedding plants, hanging baskets, starter herbs, vegetables, and planters right here in High Prairie. It all starts the first week of February (however, we are experimenting with some new plants that take a little longer). We take the extra time, attention, and investment to grow our plants so that they are the very best quality that we can off er our customers.
In our industry, we call it IPM. This is the use of plan, scouting, preventative practices, and integrated control methods to reduce pests (bugs that will destroy our beautiful plants). We try to keep our greenhouse as clean as possible. This is a preventative practice. We use biological controls (good bugs that will kill the bad bugs) that we grow in wheat grass (called banker plants). These biological controls are grown nice and early and placed strategically around the greenhouse, this is a preventative and an integrated control method. We use the least toxic options first to control anything that a biological can’t (such as safer soap (a blend of 7 different soaps). We scout several times a week to track any problems (yep, that person carrying a book and magnifying glass checking out the undersides of leaves and stems of plants is scouting).We measure the pH and EC (electric conductivity) of our plants to ensure the levels are within the best growing conditions. We lower our temperature over 6 weeks to harden our plants off along with fertilizing with a ‘hardening off’ solution. Our greenhouse is designed to allow air movement through the structure – this helps to strengthen plants and get them ready for the outdoors. We talk and sing to our plants (seriously).
