Fall Planting: What You Need to Know

    September 10, 2016November 3, 2017

Now that we’re into September it’s that time of the year where many of us are watching the leaves turn yellow, red, and purple on our trees and shrubs. We’re one big wind away from raking them up into piles (or mowing over them mulching them up into little, tiny pieces- my cheater way of

Urgh, are you confused about what plants grow here and how to tell if something will survive the winter?

    February 29, 2016November 6, 2017

March 1st. It’s a clear day with frost on the trees, but it’s been a warm winter. We had one of those February’s where you can almost wear a t-shirt outside without a jacket. The last February I remember like that was in 2002 when one afternoon I headed out for a walk with no jacket because it was 14°C.

    • I got the best idea and advice from @c_dube12 - use Peace Lilies as training plants! It’s brilliant! If you’re a first time plant owner, start with a peace lily. Why? Because they tell you when they need water 💦
And the brilliant part? When they need water, your other tropicals do too! My biggest concern sending a plant out the door is watering. What kills a plant 90% of the time is 1) overwatering or 2) under watering. But HOW do you know where the sweet spot is?
Check out these two Peace Lilies in my hands. One is really floppy. When your Peace Lily gets super floppy (like this) it’s time to water, and most likely time to water the rest of your tropical plants.
Use it as your indicator and reminder.

Thanks Chelsea for the great tip!

    • Here I am setting up the shot. What you may not know is that I batch my photos for you. What that means is that I take 3-5 (or more) pictures in one day and have them ready to roll out with captions. I do this so that I can give you an uninterrupted stream of information and tips while i travel, work, and “do real life” (ahem, like dealing with our flooding basement). I enjoy sharing these moments with you and I’ve got some great tips lined up over then next few weeks.

Ps: notice my shirt? Scroll back through my feed and you’ll land on another picture I took that day.
